Innovative lightweight construction concepts with hydroforming

Lightweight construction and resource conservation are central technology fields of our time. Commercial vehicles must also make their contribution. Cost-effectiveness is the top priority in the transport industry and therefore only solutions that combine technical progress with cost-effective processes will be successful in the future.

As part of the research project "Economic lightweight door for commercial vehicles" by Prof. Bernd Engel from the University of Siegen, fischer Hydroforming GmbH (Menden) together with the project partners EDAG Engineering Gmbh (Fulda) and Muhr Metalltechnik GmbH & Co. KG (Wenden) successfully implemented new innovative approaches.

The aim of the project was to develop a cost-effective lightweight door for commercial vehicles. In addition, many other advantages such as improved aerodynamics and reduced visibility angle coverage had to be implemented. The concept is based on a hydroformed frame which is quickly and efficiently completed with inner and outer panels to form the finished door. Weight savings of over 20% are possible compared to conventional designs.

The fischer group has many years of competence and experience in the field of hydroforming and was able to contribute valuable know-how. The innovative door concept shows the potential of hydroforming technology and the wide range of applications it can be used for.
